Maps arrived. Looking through to identify places where clay or later water could be sampled.

Starting at the head of the river and working towards the mouth. Looking for places initially where there is either:

  • Easy road access to the river or..
  • A foot or bridal path crossing or running alongside.
  • Where there is access land.

So:

  1. Deptford Moor SX267177

One of the 3 tributaries that make up the Torridge starts here by a B road off the A39 at Welcombe Cross. A mix of Marshland (public access) and confierous woodland, it runs NE towards Deptford Farm. There is a footpath at SX272182 from Deptford Farm to Home Farm at Meddon.

2. Baxworthy Cross on B3248 SX286226.

The top of Seckington Water approximately 2 miles west of the Clovelly turning on the A39. The water looks as though it starts just north of Baxworthy Cross on the road between Baxworthy Farm and Holloford Farm. No footpaths nearby.

3. Clifford Water at East Yagland SX300195.

Third water that makes up the Torridge. There is a footpathfrom Higher Huddisford to East Yagland across the river/stream (marshy) up to Trew Wood. On the map there are a number of small squares which are holiday cottages (Hartland Forest Lodges) but possibly a number of owners.

4. Biteford SX304183.

Where Seckington and Clifford Water meet up. Need to find landowner for permissions. Nearest road at SX302185 (corner).

5. Fordmill Bridge SX325178.

The road crosses the river here.
